How do I make sure my new hire gets off to a good start?
Having gone through the recruitment selection process it is time for your new hire to start
and to have their first day. A first day in a new job is a big deal for anyone, regardless of their
experience! As an employer you have a responsibility to make sure each new employee
experiences a favourable initial impression of your workplace. This can all be done by having
a carefully thought out onboarding process that swiftly integrates them into working life with
your company & helps to empower them to want to be one of the team.
In this blog I’m going to cover a few of the key aspects in creating an onboarding process,
why it’s significant and what you should be including in your own processes.
Why onboarding is really important.
An effective onboarding program helps your business by not only creating an empowering
experience for your new hire but also giving a positive impression of your company.
It also fosters key skills like communication, reinforces the foundation of teamwork and
increases productivity.
Key points for successful onboarding
These of course are always going to be company specific, so do not take these as gospel – if
you’d like help creating a bespoke onboarding checklist and process please get in touch as
I’d be happy to run through with you the best way to work.
- Communication – this should start before your new hire comes into work on their first day,
include details like start times and if there is a dress code. Once your employee starts, help
them to meet the rest of the team and get to understand the company hierarchy and
workplace environment. - Documentation – Make sure your new hire has all the relevant documents that you are
legally obliged to supply including your day 5 statement and employee handbook and
contract. - Training – Assess any knowledge gaps and arrange additional training to enhance the
employee’s skills and value to the organisation throughout their probation period. .
By focusing on these elements and making sure you are constantly affirming the company
values, treating your employee with fairness and consistency your employee will get off to a
fantastic start and should want to remain with you for the length of the contract.
The best thing about putting together an onboarding checklist and programme is it can be
rolled out again and again for each new staff member you employ. I would be delighted to
work with any business who wants to make sure their onboarding is successful and most
importantly legally compliant with WRC regulations for employees.
